Also, while the Shah's regime was repressive, in the beginning stages at least, the one that took over from him was no better. (And the US backed the Shah because of our need for oil. We really need to stop sticking our noses in other people's business.)Cathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01774383554326288663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1999659125625323494.post-8750106763626312682013-01-02T23:41:09.857-07:002013-01-02T23:41:09.857-07:00I don't know if I would read this because I kn...I don't know if I would read this because I know that the Shah's regime was brutal and repressive, the secret police notorious for their cruelty.

There is a book called Shah of Shahs, which the actor, Ben Affleck, reviewed for the Oprah show, when describing his top reads. He explains the reality of the Shah's regime, which was brought in by a coup ousting a democratically elected president, Mossadegh, who was beloved by the Iranian people.

This is very complicated, and although it's not idyllic in Iran today, it surely was not in the previous regime. I could not push that aside in reading anything. I would hope that readers also look at some of Iran's history before making judgments.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1999659125625323494.post-5823367519594221562013-01-01T23:31:01.482-07:002013-01-01T23:31:01.482-07:00The book is certainly both, Teresa. And the setting really gets my interest. And of course I find it hard to resist a well-researched novel where I really get a sense of the time period. Yeah, I'm definitely going to look into this one more. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
