Phoenix in February

I think I could go to the Desert Botanical Garden every day and see something different each time. It's that kind of place. As it is, I'm continuing my pre-New Year's resolution by visiting once a month.

Until I moved to Phoenix in 1976, February was my least favorite month. I think it would be truthful to admit that I loathed February because the skies always seemed to be overcast; it was cold; and if there was any snow, it was gray, gritty, grainy, ugly slush. It also didn't help that a local radio announcer in central Illinois made a huge production of pronouncing the word correctly. I will go to my grave saying, "Feb-YOU-airy." I can't remember that man's name, but his constant "Feb-ROO-airy" got on my last nerve.

Then I moved to Phoenix, and February here is a revelation. Temperatures are usually balmy short-sleeve weather, and spring is busting out all over. That's what Denis and I witnessed Friday during our most recent visit. What follows is a hint of things to come for those of you in colder climes. No commentary, just color. If you'd like to see any of the photos in their original sizes, click on any one of them and a new window will automatically open so that you may do so. Enjoy!

I can't wait till all the cacti start blooming!

  1. Ah, look at those gorgeous flowers!! Thanks for sharing them, Cathy! Desert blooms are just so beautiful, aren't they? Lucky you to live where you can visit them.

  2. Just beautiful! I have so enjoyed our trips to that garden. Not sure when we'll be back in Arizona again but whenever that is, we're visiting the garden. Thanks for sharing! I'm so ready for our wildflowers here. Another few weeks.

    1. We like to go on days and times when we think the garden will be less crowded. For some reason, Denis thought last Friday wouldn't be very busy. It was absolutely heaving with people, and parts of the Desert Wildflower Loop Trail were standing room only!

  4. How beautiful are those flowers. Thanks for posting them.

I love spring and can't wait for it as trees on my block blossom and flowers in little beds on the street bloom.

But one drawback which I and millions of others have to contend with: allergies. So a lot of antihistamines are used then and a/c starts running.

  5. And you live in the thick of the allergens.

    1. Phoenix is definitely not a place to live if you are riddled with allergies. We have a year-round growing season here. Something is always in bloom. I'm okay now because they passed a law about olive trees, which are popular for landscaping here. I am horribly allergic to olive pollen.
