The Hurricane Kittling Weekly Link Round-Up

There seems to be a series of hurricanes wandering around, and the afterbirth from them is getting sucked up and pumped into the desert. We've been getting a bit of rain, so it's good. Now if Mother Nature could just figure out a way to do it without raising the humidity. The overcast skies means my pool is cooling off much faster than I would like, which means I've got to make the most of what pool time I've got left.

Other than the rain, checking packing lists, putting fringe on a shawl, and color-fasting and blocking several pieces of knitting, it's been rather quiet around here, so let me head out to the corral to round up some links!

Head 'em up! Move 'em out!

►Books, Movies & Other Interesting Tidbits◄
  • Pardon my chuckle of glee, but I doubt there's any joy in the home of Harper Lee's lawyer tonight. Those "mystery papers" she found are a rough draft, not another novel.
  • How much summer reading do you actually remember?
  • Can you guess which celebrities wrote these children's books
  • You haven't seen gorgeous unless you've seen Robert Redford in 1973. I found an interview in which he talks about some of his most famous roles.
  • A founder of The Book Depository is going to launch a global online bookselling site later this year.
  • There's a Stephen King-themed crossword in The Guardian, and if you'd like to try your luck, the link to it is in the article.
  • How the King of Pop bested a Beatle
  • Toxic shock: Agatha Christie's poisons.
  • Publishers seem to have shot themselves in the foot over eBook pricing. I would imagine that I'm like many other eReader owners: I'm not going to pay high prices for eBooks when there's no guarantee the publisher/seller won't find a reason to remove them from my device.
  • This is rather eye-opening: how much money do libraries spend on eBooks?
  • Erin Brockovich will be here in Arizona next week to tour the areas  in the Navajo Nation damaged by that toxic spill.

►Channeling My Inner Indiana Jones◄
  • How did archaeologists track Lewis and Clark across the country? By following their trail of laxatives. Now... wipe that smile off your face.
  • An 11,000-year-old wooden Shigir idol has an encrypted message... and has a timeless beauty.
  • A Roman shipwreck has revealed secrets of ancient European trade.
  • Ancient coffins reveal secrets of French nobility.
  • The wills of millions of Americans are now available online.
  • A hidden figure in a famous Rembrandt painting has been uncovered using X-rays.
  • Archaeologists have begun to explore the lost world of Doggerland, a sort of British Atlantis.
  • Shame on them. Seems some contractors had hidden an ancient sarcophagus, but Israeli authorities caught them in the act.
  • How archaeologists are saving Nero's fabled treasure palace.
  • An amateur paleontologist has found a rare fossil of fish here in Arizona.
  • A river in Poland is revealing 17th century secrets amid a drought.
  • Stonehenge II has been found just one mile from Stonehenge I!

►I ♥ Lists◄

►Book Candy◄
  • Enjoy these photos of writer Jeanette Winterson's room.
  • At Litographs, promoting literacy never looked so good, and for every item you purchase from them, they donate a book. Win win.
  • This loft apartment in Bratislava, Slovakia has the one thing I'd use those soaring ceilings for-- books! (The rest of the decor I'd change!)
  • Once you've seen what's happened to the Mark Twain branch of the Detroit Public Library, you'll be heartbroken.

That's all for this week. Don't forget to stop by next Friday when I'll be sharing a freshly selected batch of links for your surfing pleasure.

Have a great weekend, and read something fabulous!

  1. I have to admit, Cathy, I always like it when we get thunderstorms and rain. We need it here! Thanks for the lovely links, as ever. Oooh, there's an Agatha Christie one! Yay! And that Roman shipwreck one. Irresistible!
