The New Freezer Arriveth Weekly Link Round-Up

It is now official. I'm 56, and I'm just now getting into cooking a bit more. I'll never love it, but at least I can see the value of having things on hand that I can turn into meals. Why am I saying this? Because a new upright freezer was delivered this week. Now I've got to go to the grocery store and buy things to put in it. However, if I play my cards right, I'll be cutting down the amount of time I spend shopping. That's a good thing because I don't like buying groceries.

Some new cushions for the patio furniture were also delivered, and I'll be taking some photos of my outside reading spaces for you to see some time in the future.

I have been sitting outside every afternoon, and I've been getting a lot of reading done. I've also been watching the wildlife. Have you ever seen two butterflies duke it out over some flowers? I have. A Cloudless Sulphur and a Giant Swallowtail. I've also been watching the verdins feed their young. (I intend to have a post about these funny little birds soon.)

The absolute hit of my afternoon wildlife listening has been the resident mockingbird who's learned how to imitate the clang of the light rail bell as it goes down the tracks a couple of blocks away. That's not the best in his repertoire, though. His best is singing the opening notes of "La Cucaracha". The first time I heard that, I almost fell out of my chair laughing.

Where are the links? Oops. This is the link round-up, isn't it? Let me see what I've been saving for you!

  1. I'm not much of a cook either Cathy but do subscribe to the OAMC philosophy (Once A Month Cooking) I not quite a slave to it (like some on the threads in cooking forums) but when I cook soup, casseroles, muffins or anything that freezes i do it in bulk and put serving-size portions in the freezer.

  2. I used to cook a lot more and I've kind of forgotten how. I plan to be a more active cook when we move to the new house. The nearest grocery is a bit of drive and I will have to plan better and do much bigger shopping trips. Like you, I truly hate to shop for groceries, but it must be done. :-)

Enjoy your new freezer, Cathy. Looking forward to reading about your creature adventures. We once had a cat that was targeted by a specific mockingbird. I think our cat had perhaps gotten the bird's wife or something. It would divebomb the cat every time he went outside. Kind of funny to see!

  3. Cathy - I hope you'll really like your new freezer. I wouldn't exactly call myself a gourmet chef, either, really. I don't generally have a lot of time for full-out cooking but when I do I enjoy it. Oh, and thanks for those links!

  4. Bernadette-- That's what I need to do more of... cooking in bulk. Just didn't have anywhere to put it all!

Kay-- Yes, we must eat, although that seems to cause all sorts of problems!

    Margot-- You're welcome!

  6. Having a big freezer is wonderful. Since I don't have a lot of time to cook, when I do make sauce or chili I do it in bulk and then freeze it. The freezer is also good for storing all the tomatoes and herbs from my garden.

I love sitting in the yard and watching the wildlife. We don't have talented mockingbirds here though.

    Enjoying the links as always.

  7. So they made a simpler e-reader for women, eh? Oh that's right, I always forget we aren't as smart as men. :D

Since we live out in the country far from our favorite pizza place, we buy a half dozen pizzas at a time and put them in one meal bags for the freezer. We also buy a lot of meat from the butcher (also miles away) and stock the freezer.

  8. Dorte-- Indeed you do! Catbirds are also very adept at imitating sounds, although by their name, you'll be able to know which is their best imitation. :)

Leslie-- Having a garden in this climate requires a lot of extra work that my farm town central Illinois brain hasn't wanted to cope with. I might be brave one of these years and try container gardening.

Barbara-- I wondered who'd be the first to comment about those simpler eReaders! LOL I sincerely hope that Denis doesn't see your comment. If he had his way, we'd have pizza every night of the week, and I have to stand firm on the NO! side!
