Mailbox Monday-- Receiving More Rain Than Books

Mailbox Monday is on tour! That's right-- my favorite weekly meme is out and about. For the entire month of August you'll be able to find Mailbox Monday on Shanyn's blog, Chick Loves Lit. If taking a look at the books other people discovered in their mailboxes intrigues you and if you'd like to participate, just click on that redhead over to the left. She'll take you right to the heart of the action on Chick Loves Lit. Thanks for hosting, Shanyn!

This past week saw Phoenix get more rain than I got books-- which is a very, very good thing. I sent 5 books to new Paperback Swap (PBS) foster homes, and I received 4.

Here's the rundown on the four books that I received:

  • Running From the Devil by Jamie Freveletti (PBS). "On a fact-finding mission, a female biochemist for a cosmetics company takes a flight from Miami to Bogota and ends up in a fiery crash landing. The pace of Freveletti’s plot is quickly established: chemist Emma Caldridge is thrown from the wreckage, along with some other surviving passengers. She, however, has been thrown the farthest and witnesses guerrilla soldiers closing in on the passengers from a seemingly safe distance in the jungle. Caldridge tracks the band of hostages, gaining an ally in another passenger separated from the group, a government agent. The action shuttles between the wilds of the rain forest and D.C., as a military contractor tries to rescue the survivors of the crash. A hidden biological weapon, a terrorist timetable, and Caldridge’s survival skills all help hold readers’ interest in this pulse-pounding thriller."
  • Horse of Two Colors by Glenn Balch (PBS). "Mots-kay ands Pan-sook, two Indian youths, had been prisoners in a small Spanish settlement in the American Southwest for nearly a year. This is the story of their daring escape from the Spaniards, and of their long, difficult, and tragic journey to their homelands. This is also the story of the fulfillment of a vision-- the vision Mots-kay had of a beautiful silvery-white stallion covered with startling blue-gray spots. In these pages, Glenn Balch has vividly described the realization of the vision, and the skill and ingenuity the two boys use in traveling, ill-equipped, across hundreds of miles of rugged land. He has also presented an interesting and original theory of how the sturdy Appaloosa breed of horses had its beginnings among America's Northwestern Indians."
  • The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen (PBS). "Dr. Catherine Cordell, the main character in this chilling tale, thought she had shot and killed her rapist and would-be murderer two years earlier in steamy Savannah, where he was a surgery intern at her hospital. Now, in Boston, as another hot summer begins, he appears to have miraculously returned and embarked once again on his grisly mission: he rapes women, then surgically removes their wombs. As two intrepid detectives Thomas Moore and Jane Rizzoli investigate, Cordell begins to doubt her own memories (or lack of) and discovers that not even her OR is safe."
  • Every Bitter Thing by Leighton Gage (from the author). "The son of the Foreign Minister of Venezuela is found dead in his apartment in Brasilia. Due to the political nature of the crime, Chief Inspector Mario Silva of Brazil's Federal Police is called in to investigate. As he delves deeper into the murder, he discovers that a chain of murders have occurred throughout Brazil, all with the same MO: victims are first shot in the stomach, then brutally beaten to death, and, even more puzzling, they were all passengers on TAB flight 8101 from Miami to São Paulo. What sinister motive connects these killings? And why does it appear one passenger on that flight, a fifteen-year-old boy who was later raped and killed in prison, is at the heart of it all?"
I've been watching Rizzoli & Iles on TNT, so now I'm starting yet another series with Tess Gerritsen. I'm reliving my childhood with Glenn Balch's book, and I'm going to find out what it's like to be on the run in the jungle down in Colombia. Leighton Gage's book won't be released until December, which is a good thing for me. I still have two more books in his series to read before I'm ready for this one!

Now it's time for the fun part: visiting the blogs of other Mailbox Monday participants to see what goodies they received!

  2. I didn't know that Rizzoli and Iles was Tess Gerritson.

We do a Books on Screen column (and love guest contributors), so if you wanted to talk about the show and her detectives, that would be awesome. Send me an email and let me know.
