Weekly Link Round-Up

Phoenicians are living through normal summer days. (They're called Excessive Heat Advisories.) Yes, it's the time of year when folks who live in San Diego trot out all their "Zonie" jokes because, to them, it seems more Arizonans are living in San Diego than in their home state. But hey, it's a dry heat, right? Let's get to the links before I start working up a sweat!

Bookish News & Other Fun Stuff
  • Even folks outside the LA area knew about Acres of Books. Unfortunately, it is no more, but the iconic bookstore had one last chance to help its community.
  • The Glamorous Life of a (Down Under) Used Book Dealer.
  • For two weeks a husband helped his wife by working in her bookstore. He lived to tell the tale. (Actually nothing that anyone who's ever worked retail wouldn't identify with!)
  • I Write Like is sweeping the Internet. I took it three times myself. Three different blog posts. Three different answers. H.P. Lovecraft, Dan Brown, and Vladimir Nabokov. Perhaps I'm a touch schizophrenic?
  • Ever wonder what an attic sale might look like in one of the great British country homes? Chatsworth is having one. Wish I could go!
  • Another thing sweeping the Internet is the "Ark", a combination bookshelf/staircase. Take a look at this video tour.
  • Heard about the cat burglar in Southampton?
  • One of my favorite blogs posted something droolworthy for all the lighthouse fanatics amongst us.
  • A perfect combination of two loves of mine: architecture and books-- Writers' Houses, Where Stories Live.
  • 16 of the greatest books about baseball.

Hopefully some of those tickled your fancy. Don't forget to stop by next Friday when I'll have a fresh batch of links for your surfing pleasure!

Now pardon me while I look out the window and make a bet as to whether this wind is just another dust storm or... we might actually get a drop or two of rain!

  1. I look forward to and enjoy your Weekly Link Round-Up. You always have interesting information. Tomorrow my Slapdash Sunday is a bit about this. If you get a chance, please stop by here and hopefully you will leave a comment.

  2. This summer Pennsylvania is doing its very best to match Phoenix heat although we have high humidity too. We haven't gone over 100 yet but we're close. I'm nostalgic for last summer which was cooler than normal and rainier. This year our lawn is brown and crunchy. Yuck!

  3. Another great week of worthwhile links! I particularly enjoyed the Chatsworth attic sale (the library ladder is amazing - not to mention the beautiful textiles); the comments from the husband doing bookstore duty are absolutely priceless! - I intend to spend quite a bit of time reviewing the Writers' Houses website - and I must read and memorize how to properly give credit on my blog when using a Flickr photo (I always try to give credit where credit is due - but not sure I have been doing it correctly).

Try to stay cool - and have a great reading week, Cathy!

  4. That "I write like" test is really fun.

I tested some lines of my cozy mystery, and the first time it told me I wrote like Woodhouse (quite suitable for a cozy, I think). The next two paragraphs were like James Joyce. Not quite sure I buy that. Very flattering, though.

  5. Cheryl-- You've just pointed out one of my weaknesses: I'm good at visiting but horrible at leaving comments. :( I'm glad you enjoy the feature.

Barbara-- I have desert landscaping, and it has been known to crunch.

Molly-- I'm glad you found so much of interest. As soon as I'm caught up replying to comments, I'm heading for the pool. It's the normal toasty weather here in the desert.

Dorte-- If I hadn't gotten a different answer each time, I might've been a bit flattered, but it left me feeling like it was just a gimmick. Oh well. :)
