I Chose the House-- Now All I Have to Do Is Win the Lottery

You may remember that, a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I like to go house hunting on the Internet in anticipation of winning the Lottery. I asked for your help in choosing between three houses on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Here are the three choices:

I have to admit that I was leaning toward The Bothy for the longest time. I really liked the view out all those windows and the fact that it was more secluded than the others-- to the point where no one would be able to drive up if it were high tide. Being able to moor a boat close by was another big plus in The Bothy's favor.

Why did I change my mind? No fireplaces and knotty pine paneling. I lived for ten years in a small house with an interior done almost totally in knotty pine. To say that it's not one of my favorites would be an understatement. In addition I took into consideration my usual luck and realized that, if there were any medical emergency, it would undoubtedly occur during high tide.

So... what house did I finally choose? I went with your advice of course and chose Sea Cottage (house #1). Its location outside Broadford was a factor in its favor, and although it's not as close as the one at The Bothy, there is a place to moor a boat. Then, too, some features of the house just wouldn't turn me loose.

Although I don't enjoy cooking and you normally wouldn't find me hanging out in a kitchen, the kitchen in this house could make me change my mind. The colors, the light, that window seat, the rocking chair, and that bright red Aga win me over. (Any of you feel like cooking on an island in Scotland? I'll hang out with you and we'll talk books!)

Another huge plus in this house's favor was that deck, those windows, and that view. Those cannon would have to go, but I can definitely see me either on the deck or right inside with my camera watching otters and other wildlife. I might even be able to read a book or two, but I know that view would keep pulling me away!

Something tells me that Denis and I wouldn't be short of visitors, and that I would want to extend my stay there to experience all the seasons from Sea Cottage!

  3. I'm surprised you haven't won the lottery yet. I get multiple emails on a daily basis telling me that I've won. Of course, so far I haven't seen a single check . . . ;)

  4. I think I chose number 2, Seawrack House, but I'll still visit you and Denis, so I hope you win the lottery soon. I've always wanted to visit Scotland!

  5. Excellent choice, but I'd rather have the blue Aga. Oh well, small price to pay.

When you win that lottery, remember me -- if you send for me (and pay), I'll cook for you and talk books and photos until the wee hours of the night.

  6. Congratulations on your excellent choice!
And remember, I have already invited myself. You wouldn´t want ME to cook, though (unless you want to lose a lot of weight), so Beth and my husband could take turns in the kitchen.

Do we bring our own books, or have you stocked the shelves?

  7. Lovely houses :-) But way too secluded for me. I like living in the city. I grew up in the absolute sticks and haven't looked back once since I moved from home to the big city! My parents still live there though, and it is great to visit...

  8. What a wonderful view! Good choice! Would love this house myself! Are you having a special blogger get together after winning the lottery and buying the house!? What a perfect spot for a readers respite!!

  9. Great choice! I sure wouldn't mind living there either. Unfortunately for me I can't even win 10 bucks let alone enough to buy a house. lol.

  12. Cathy, I have been away travelling to Perth (Aust)and didn't know you were going to win the lottery. How lovely!

Love the house(s), and wondered if I could recommend an author for you. I know you love crime, but these books are about Skye, and I love them: Lilian Beckwith is the author. Beautiful Just, The Hills is Lonely, Bruach Blend. I think they will give you a lovely flavour for your kitchen with no cooking needed.

We are toying with going to the UK next year, so please time your win before then.

  14. Margot K-- If it's a truly obscene amount of money, I could always have my Lear jet and limo on standby to pick y'all up. ;)

Blodeuedd-- I do, too, which probably sounds strange since I love the desert as well.

Gwen-- I've heard the check is in the mail.

Belle-- I think you'd love Scotland.

    Beth-- It's a deal!

Dorte-- Visits include trips to Scotland's "book town" as well as Hay-on-Wye and other places. If I'm going to dream, I'm going to dream big!

Louise-- I grew up in the sticks and now live in a huge metropolitan area. I could easily go back to living in the sticks as long as civilization is within a reasonable distance. I do like my comforts!

Suzanne-- There are so many of us that I'd probably have to organize shifts. The house isn't that big! LOL

Dar-- Believe me... I feel your pain!

    Kathy-- Will do!

Wendi-- That's always been a fun dream for me.

Suzanne-- Thanks for the recommendation. I already have a couple of her books.

    Serena-- Great minds think alike!
